The 5D Mark III and Magic Lantern for Underwater Videography Now standard with many DSLRs like the 5D Mark III, H.264 is a reasonable codec in well lit and relatively low dynamic range environments. However, it just doesn’t have the flexibility to stand up to the demands of high quality underwater filming and color correction.

I used Magic Lantern routinely for several years with my two 5D-II's. The short downtime whilst ML restarted every 30 mins was not an issue for me as as I would have the cams starting at slightly different times so there was never a moment when both cams failed to record simultaneously.

According to Magic Lantern, there are some downsides to using the Dual ISO firmware, though. Vertical resolution is reduced by half and there's more moiré and aliasing in over and underexposed areas. The author also warns that since this software modifies the sensor's operation, you could end up frying your camera.

Downside: Due to 6D write-speed limitations it can't record in full HD. -Follow focus: Define 2 points and the camera automatically slides the focus between these when you press play (very handy for movies). ML for 5DIII is not yet compatible with Canon's 1.2.X firmware (currently 1.2.3) and you need to roll back to 1.1.3 before using ML. 2. ML sets a flag (the "bootflag") in the 5DIII firmware and even if you uninstall ML or do not reload it after initial use, that flag stays set and cannot easily/safely be unset. Magic Lantern has an internal benchmark that writes a block of data to the card with the card controller. In the 5D Mark III I got sustained 75MB/s write speeds to my 1000x compact flash card which I used in the 1D C to record 4K MJPEG. Not only is the card capable of that rate, but the internal card controller seems to be too. dQxHt.
